By pet-insurance direct premiums written in states and US territories, the NAIC’s 2025 table ranks Trupanion Group first, Nationwide Corporation Group second and JAB Holding Company Group third. This is an insurance-group size ranking for a stated reporting period, not a list of the best policies or a count of pets covered by each consumer brand.

What to know

Why a familiar brand may not have its own row

A shopping brand, an administrator, a legal underwriting company and a corporate group can occupy different positions in the same transaction. Ask which entity is being ranked before concluding that a brand is missing or small. Several purchase routes can point to an insurer in the same group; counting every logo as a separate underwriting group can duplicate the underlying business.

New Jersey’s regulator roster provides a useful concrete illustration of this distinction: it lists insurance-company groups alongside carriers and marketing names. That roster is a way to understand the relationships, not a substitute for the national size table or a statement that every listed route is accepting every new application.

When investigating a brand, obtain the legal insurer from the current offered documents. Then ask whether that insurer belongs to the group you are researching.

Claims

Do not splice together incompatible size claims

Different questions require different denominators. Premium volume, insured-pet enrollment, policy count, corporate revenue and assets are not interchangeable. A high premium total can reflect more covered pets, different benefits, higher prices or some combination; it does not by itself identify the cause.

Trupanion’s SEC filing, for example, describes subscription and other-business activity and operations beyond the United States. A consolidated enrolled-pet figure from that filing should not be dropped into a US-only statutory-premium table as though it measures the same thing. The comparison would change both the unit and the geographic boundary.

If you see another “largest” list, write its metric, geography, reporting period and whether it uses a company, group or brand. Where any of those fields is missing, the disagreement may be methodological rather than an error. Do not average rankings from unlike measures into a supposedly stronger result.

Decision guide

Use size as context, then make a policy decision

A size table can help identify major underwriting groups for further investigation. It cannot tell you whether a specific exclusion affects your pet, whether the deductible structure fits your budget or whether your preferred clinic has a direct-payment arrangement. Those require the actual offered policy and practice information.

Nor does premium volume establish claim-service quality, financial strength or the probability that your particular claim will be paid. If one of those is your concern, ask for evidence aimed at that concern rather than treating this table as a surrogate rating.

Build a shortlist from products actually available to your pet and residence. Compare medical scope, existing-history treatment, retained costs and payment process. Keep the group’s size as a separate descriptive fact. A smaller route could meet a need better; a larger one still needs to pass the same contract checks.

The ranking is not a recommendation to switch. If your pet is already covered, investigate what a replacement would do to the medical-history assessment and continuing treatment before ending the old contract.

Evidence

Sources and policy context

These public references support the consumer or veterinary context. Named insurer details were checked in official product materials; the policy offered for your pet and state determines the actual terms.
